A dentist can also be located via your insurance company and this is one area where you want to check your policy carefully. Dental care for those under 18 is covered in basic insurance. An annual check-up for adults may be included in the basic insurance package (but not the hygienist fees, for instance). You can pay for additional cover. Just as with the family doctor, it is important to register with a dentist. This is to ensure that a dentist will be available to take care of you, if an urgent dental problem should arise. Dentists are in short supply in the Netherlands so many practices are full and not taking new patients.
